The new version of Coreboot, the free firmware that replaces traditional BIOS/UEFI, is here. Update 26.06 expands its support for recent Intel and AMD processors, in addition to adding compatibility with 31 additional motherboards, including several ASUS models and Framework laptops. For the average user, this means being able to start the system faster and with greater security, without being tied to manufacturer updates.
Expanded compatibility and optimized booting 🚀
The new Coreboot 26.06 integrates support for Intel Meteor Lake and AMD Phoenix microarchitectures, allowing its use on modern computers. Boards such as the ASUS ROG Strix B550-F and the Framework 13 are also added. By replacing proprietary firmware, boot time is reduced and unnecessary processes are eliminated. The project continues its advance towards an ecosystem where the end user has real control over the hardware, although it requires some technical knowledge for installation.
Goodbye, bloatware: now your board boots before your coffee ☕
With this update, your motherboard will no longer have to simulate being a space control center during boot. While the factory firmware takes its time to load animations and menus you use once a year, Coreboot simply turns on and passes the baton to the operating system. It's like going from a car that needs to warm up the engine for ten minutes to one that starts instantly. Too bad it still can't do the shopping while you wait.
