Chamberí dons green: Alonso Cano renews for four point four million

The Madrid City Council has given the green light to the renovation of Alonso Cano Street in the Chamberí district. With an investment of 4.4 million euros, the works will extend until summer 2027. The project aims to transform the street into a more livable space, with 120 new trees and more than 1,200 square meters of pedestrian area.

More shade and less asphalt: the technical recipe for the new street 🌳

The intervention bets on urban renaturalization. 120 trees of different species will be planted to generate shade and reduce heat. 1,211 square meters of sidewalk will be added, prioritizing pedestrians over cars. The new efficient LED lighting will lower energy consumption, while benches and furniture will aim to encourage lingering. The execution period of two and a half years suggests it will not be a quick project.

Residents, sit back and wait (literally) until 2027 🪑

Chamberí residents will have plenty of time to get an idea of the new neighborhood. The works will not finish until summer 2027, which means several years of noise, detours, and dust. The reward: new benches to sit on and watch how the works on the next block never end. At least, when they finish, they will have 120 trees to shelter from the sun while waiting for the next renovation.
