Cash App has introduced a peculiar accessory: a magic wand with NFC technology that enables contactless payments. With a design reminiscent of those from Harry Potter, the device is offered as a playful alternative to a physical card or mobile phone. It costs $25 and is aimed at users over 13 years old, including security features such as remote locking from the app.
Integrated NFC and security from the app 🪄
The wand works via an NFC chip hidden in its tip, which communicates with compatible payment terminals. When brought close, the payment is processed like any contactless card. The Cash App allows you to remotely lock the accessory in case of loss or theft, and also offers configurable spending limits. However, being a standalone object, its loss is a real risk that does not exist with a mobile phone, which is always more integrated into the user's daily life.
The $25 financial spell 💸
For $25, the user can feel like a financial wizard, even though the real trick is paying the same as with a plastic card they already have in their wallet. For teenagers, the risk is not just losing the wand, but thinking the money comes out of a magic hat instead of a bank account. In the end, the only spell that works is the one that makes the balance disappear without anyone quite knowing how.
