From today until August 30, the Italian city of Carrara hosts White Carrara, an event that transforms its streets and squares into an open-air gallery. Over 30 marble design works, such as benches and lampposts, created by international designers with local companies, are installed as permanent urban furniture. Thus, the culture of marble becomes useful and accessible to all citizens.
Functional marble: design that integrates technique and public space 🏛️
The White Carrara pieces are not decorative sculptures, but functional objects that respond to urban needs. Each design, from modular benches to lighting systems, is made with local marble using CNC cutting processes and handcrafted finishing. The collaboration between creators and local workshops allows exploring the material's resistance and versatility, integrating it into the urban landscape with criteria of durability and low maintenance. A commitment to design applied to everyday life.
Marble benches: the new luxury of sitting on the street 🪑
Finally, the citizens of Carrara will be able to rest on marble benches without fear of the City Council removing them for being too elegant. Of course, we'll have to see how posteriors adapt to contact with cold stone in the middle of August. And if anyone complains about the weight, let them know that these benches won't fly away with the next gale. Marble is no longer just for tombstones and statues: now it's also for sitting and complaining in style.
