Peter Cannon: DC Comics Forgotten Thunderbolt

Created by Pete Morisi in 1966, Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt, was a superhero with psychic powers who could materialize a bolt of energy. His original publication in Thunderbolt #1, under the Charlton Comics imprint, led to a brief stint at DC after the publisher's acquisition. However, his presence in the DC universe faded almost without a trace.

The technical legacy of a paper hero ⚡

Morisi, also an illustrator, gave Peter Cannon a peculiar origin: an orphan raised by Tibetan monks who learns to control his mind to generate a bolt of energy. Visually, his design was simple: a blue suit with a yellow lightning bolt on the chest. Narratively, his power was limited to controlled use of his mental strength, without flight or super strength. This minimalist approach set him apart from other heroes of the time, but also condemned him to a short editorial life.

The superhero who took an eternal vacation 😴

Peter Cannon disappeared from DC's map without a sound. While other Charlton characters like Blue Beetle or The Question had second chances, Thunderbolt remained in limbo. Perhaps his power to generate lightning bolts was too specific, or simply, the Tibetan monks didn't teach him how to ask for a page increase. The truth is that the only bolt he has seen in decades is that of a photocopier in some DC office.
