The Urban Guard of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat has intercepted an electric scooter driver traveling at 82 km/h, more than triple the legal limit of 25 km/h. Additionally, the man tested positive for drugs. For citizens, this case represents a real danger on the streets, as a collision at that speed can be fatal. Authorities imposed a fine of 1,500 euros and confiscated the vehicle.
Technical limits and modifications that boost speed 🛴
Standard electric scooters have a regulator that limits motor power to not exceed 25 km/h, according to regulations. To reach 82 km/h, it is necessary to tamper with the electronic controller or install a higher voltage battery and a more powerful motor. These modifications are not only illegal but also overload the chassis and brakes, designed for low speeds. Riding like this, and under the influence of drugs, multiplies the risk of losing control and causing a serious accident.
Formula 1 on two wheels and a positive test 🏎️
82 km/h on a scooter is the cruising speed of a car on a highway. The driver was only missing an aerodynamic helmet and a rear spoiler to look like a race car driver. The difference is that in F1 you get penalized for speeding, here you get fined 1,500 euros and lose your scooter. That said, to race like that, it's better to rent a go-kart, which at least has real disc brakes.
