Dan Jurgens, known for his work on Superman, created Maya (Chandi Gupta) in 1991. This superheroine of Indian origin appeared in the pages of DC Comics with powers linked to the manipulation of light and energy. However, after a handful of appearances, the character disappeared from the editorial map, becoming a collector's item and a forgotten name for the casual reader.
The Technical Development of a Luminous Power 💡
Maya possessed the ability to generate and control solid light, a power that allowed her to create energy constructs, blind enemies, or fly. From a narrative standpoint, her visual design and abilities fit the template of versatile power heroes from the early 90s. However, her origin as an avatar of a Hindu goddess did not receive enough development, and her inclusion in storylines like Bloodlines was not enough to establish her. The lack of her own character arc condemned her to editorial oblivion.
The Club of Heroes No One Remembers 🦸♂️
Maya shares a fate with other 90s heroes who appeared, had their moment of fame, and then vanished. It's as if DC has a closet full of character files and every so often shakes the dust off to see if any stick. Spoiler: Maya is still at the bottom of the drawer, probably alongside a couple of forgotten capes and a copy of the collector's edition of Bloodlines.
