Kanto, also known as Iluthin, is one of those forgotten characters Jack Kirby created during his time at DC Comics. He first appeared in The New Gods #5 in 1971, designed as a warrior from Apokolips with stealth and combat skills. His role was to be a loyal enforcer for Darkseid, but his presence faded over the years until he nearly vanished from canon. Today, few fans recognize him, and his legacy remains a mystery even to collectors.
Stealth Technology and Weaponry in the Fourth World 🛡️
Kirby equipped Kanto with an optical camouflage suit and an energy rifle capable of firing freezing and heat rays. His gear, typical of Fourth World technology, included a belt with limited teleportation and lightweight alien metal armor. Unlike other New Gods, Kanto did not rely on the Omega Force or divine powers; his effectiveness was based on infiltration tactics and precise assassination. A functional design, but overshadowed by figures like Orion or Lightray.
Kanto: The New God Lost in His Own Stealth 👻
With such equipment, one would think Kanto would be a fearsome recurring villain. But no. He appears, fires his toy rifle, and then disappears for decades. His stealth is so effective that even the writers forget him. Kirby created him, but even he didn't seem to remember to give him a memorable story. In the end, Kanto is like that relative who comes to Christmas dinner, eats a piece of cake, and leaves without anyone asking how he is. A disposable superhero.
