The Golden Village cinema at Plaza Singapura will close its doors in August 2025, a victim of the shopping mall's renovation. After 28 years of operation, the final screenings are scheduled for August 2 in some halls and August 16 in the rest. The news marks the loss of an accessible entertainment venue in the Orchard district, although moviegoers still have nearby branches to turn to.
The digital transition and the challenge of audience migration 🎬
The closure forces a rethink of projection logistics in the area. Golden Village maintains operating cinemas in Suntec City, Jurong Point, and Tiong Bahru, all equipped with 4K digital projectors and Dolby Atmos sound systems. The company will need to redistribute the flow of viewers to these complexes, which offer reclining seats and extended hours. However, the migration is not automatic: the central location of Plaza Singapura was a key factor for audiences without their own vehicle.
Goodbye to popcorn, hello to ceiling renovations 🍿
Movie fans will now have to decide whether to walk 15 minutes under the tropical sun to Somerset or venture on the MRT to Dhoby Ghaut with a bucket of popcorn in hand. The worst part isn't losing the theater, but knowing that in its place a bubble tea shop or an iPhone case store will likely open. At least Tuesday discounts will still exist, even if it's in a different queue.
