Created by Jerry Siegel and illustrated by John Forte, Polar Boy, whose real name is Brek Bannin, debuted as a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. His ability to generate extreme cold positioned him as a curious character within the group, but over time he disappeared from the main storylines. Today, few remember this icy hero who fought alongside Superboy.
The technical development of a limited cryogenic power ❄️
In terms of development, Polar Boy's power was based on manipulating ambient temperature to create ice and freezing fog. Unlike other heroes with climate control, his range was short and required constant concentration. In the comics, this translated into close-quarters combat where his main defense was slowing down enemies. Siegel and Forte did not delve into the scientific origin of his ability, leaving it as a natural gift from his home planet, Tharr. With the Legion reboot in the 1990s, his presence faded until he became a cameo.
The cold oblivion of a frozen legionnaire 🥶
The irony is that Polar Boy, despite his name, was never the most popular or the most powerful. At Legion meetings, he was surely the one who complained the most about the air conditioning. Today, his greatest achievement is appearing on lists of forgotten characters, like that friend you invite to a party and no one remembers their name. At least, his icy legacy reminds us that not all superheroes can be Superman.
