Nura Nal, known as Dream Girl, was a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, a team from the 30th century. Created by Edmond Hamilton and illustrated by John Forte, she possessed the ability to see the future while sleeping. Despite her usefulness in predicting threats, her presence in the current DC universe is almost nonexistent, disappearing from main storylines after the New 52 reboot.
The technical challenge of a predictive power 😴
From a narrative standpoint, developing a character with prophetic vision presents problems. If their predictions are too accurate, they eliminate dramatic tension. If they are vague or fail, the power loses value. In comics, this led to Dream Girl being relegated to a secondary or support role, with her visions functioning as simple plot twists. Her reliance on sleep to activate her power also limits her direct action in combat, making her less versatile than other Legionnaires.
Pajamas and prophecies: Nura's work life 🛌
Imagine having a job where you need to sleep to be productive. Nura pulled it off, but her bosses in the Legion probably saw her as the teammate who took a nap while everyone else fought. The worst part is that, upon waking up, she would drop something like: Today we'll die if we don't dodge that ray. A power that forces you to take naps in the middle of a battle is hardly the most heroic.
