Kelvin Mao, alias Ballistic, debuted in 1994 under the pen of Doug Moench and the pencil of Michael Dutkiewicz. This cybernetic vigilante appeared in titles like Batman: Shadow of the Bat and Showcase '94, but his run was brief. Equipped with an armed exoskeleton, he promised more than the publishing market of the time was willing to sustain.
The suit that made him unstoppable (in theory) 🤖
Ballistic's design was based on a biomechanical armor that enhanced his strength and endurance. Its main feature was a ballistic projectile system integrated into the shoulders and forearms, controlled by neural impulses. Although visually striking, his technology offered no narrative innovation beyond the tactical arsenal. In a universe where Batman used batarangs and Superman fired heat rays, Kelvin Mao was a soldier with a lot of scrap metal.
What happened? He ran out of batteries 🔋
After a couple of cameos in The Titans and Green Arrow, Ballistic vanished from the radar. Literally. His last appearance was in 2011, in the background of a panel from Justice League: Generation Lost. No one claims him, not even in crisis crossovers. It seems his suit didn't have a USB port to update. Or maybe Doug Moench forgot him in a drawer alongside other failed projects.
