The ghost climate observatory remains abandoned in Benicàssim
On the coast of Benicàssim, a silhouette of concrete and steel interrupts the landscape. It is the skeleton of what was to be an advanced Climate Studies Center, a project that stopped dead and now crumbles in front of the sea. 🏗️
A design to decipher the weather
The original plans showed a building with architecture integrated into the environment. Large glass surfaces would allow observing the sea and the sky, key elements for its mission. The objective was to analyze atmospheric data and model climate behavior with supercomputers.
Planned features of the center:- Laboratories for experimenting with climate scenarios.
- Spaces dedicated to installing high-precision measurement equipment.
- Rooms with supercomputers for processing meteorological information in real time.
A place created to foresee changes in the environment could not anticipate its own future of abandonment.
The halt and deterioration
A combination of financing problems for the work and various legal conflicts froze the construction. Only the main structure was erected, leaving the foundations and walls exposed to the elements.
Consequences of abandonment:- The concrete erodes due to rain, salty wind, and sun.
- Vegetation invades the cracks and interior spaces.
- The rooms that were supposed to house cutting-edge technology are empty and exposed.
A symbol of lost opportunities
Today, the place does not generate knowledge, but questions. It stands as a tangible testimony of how bureaucratic and economic obstacles can halt science. Its current state makes one reflect on the fate of the invested resources and the projects that never come to fruition. The ghost climate observatory remains there, challenging the time it was supposed to study. 👻
