The second season of The Rig, the Amazon Prime Video suspense series, immerses its audience in an underwater environment as fascinating as it is terrifying. This time, the crew of an oil rig in the North Sea faces a mysterious microbial life form known as The Ancestor, whose presence threatens to disrupt the ocean's balance.
A Digitally Generated Underwater Ecosystem
To bring this enigmatic creature and its environment to life, the team at Vine FX developed an impressive underwater landscape composed of mycelial structures extending 400 meters underwater. With a total of 115 shots, the studio combined conceptual illustrations with procedural simulations to achieve an organic and realistic growth for each element of the ecosystem.
Bioluminescence and Natural Design
One of the most innovative aspects of the project was the application of bioluminescence to the underwater flora. Using Houdini and its Solaris system, mesh lights were implemented within the trunks of the underwater trees, achieving an internal lighting effect that gave the scene a hypnotic and immersive appearance.

Lighting and Floating Particles for Greater Immersion
To enhance the sense of depth, Vine FX combined computer-generated effects with live-action footage, achieving a seamless fusion between the digital ocean and real filming. The key to reaching an exceptional level of realism was:

To streamline the workflow, the studio implemented Universal Scene Description (USD), a technology that facilitates the management of complex scenes and allows for the reuse of environments without needing to render each shot from scratch. This optimization improved control over the visual effects, ensuring total coherence in every shot.
