The animated series Iyanu takes viewers to a world where Yoruba mythology, magic, and adventure intertwine in a unique story. Based on the graphic novel Iyanu: Child of Wonder, this production explores the journey of a young orphan who discovers her connection to divine powers while facing an unknown threat.
The transformation of a heroine
Iyanu yearns for a normal life, but the awakening of her abilities propels her into a journey of self-discovery and heroism. Accompanied by her friends Biyi and Toye, as well as the enigmatic magical leopard Ekun, she must face dark forces that threaten the stability of Yorubaland.
An authentic voice cast
To give authenticity to the series, the voice cast is entirely composed of African actors. Among the standout names are:
- Serah Johnson as Iyanu.
- Okey Jude in the role of Biyi.
- Samuel Kugbiyi portraying Toye.
Cultural richness is reflected not only in the voices but also in the setting and visual design of the animation.
Roye Okupe's vision
Roye Okupe, creator and showrunner of the series, has worked closely with a team of artists to ensure the production faithfully represents Yoruba mythology and traditions. His collaboration with Lion Forge Entertainment, an African-American animation studio, has been key to bringing this story to a global audience.
Commitment to diversity
The project not only seeks to entertain but also to expand the representation of African culture in animation. Through a visually striking narrative and deep characters, Iyanu highlights the importance of telling stories that celebrate different cultural perspectives.
A global premiere
The series debut is scheduled for April 5 on Cartoon Network, followed by its premiere on Max the next day. Additionally, the Showmax platform will distribute it in 44 African countries starting from June 13, while ITVX will premiere it in the United Kingdom and Ireland during the summer.
A step forward in animation
Iyanu represents an advance in animation inspired by African culture. With a combination of action, mythology, and adventure, this series not only promises entertainment but also an immersive experience that highlights the richness of a tradition little explored in the animation industry.
