Iván Romeo: the revelation of Spanish cycling and his 3D representation
The current season has seen Iván Romeo emerge as one of the most promising figures in national cycling. At just 22 years old and part of the prestigious Movistar Team, this young talent has demonstrated exceptional abilities that earned him the title of Spanish champion. His evolution has been both constant and spectacular, standing out in numerous competitions both within and outside the country. The development of his career was progressing ideally, including standout participations in the Tour where he confirmed his place among the world elite of professional cycling 🚴♂️.
Sports career and crucial moment
The peak of his season occurred during the world championship in Singapore, where Romeo was one of the few Spanish representatives in the competition. Unfortunately, an unexpected health problem frustrated his chances of crowning his extraordinary campaign with an outstanding result in the most important event. This medical complication prevented him from shining in the pinnacle event of the cycling calendar, leaving a certain bitterness in the close of a season that had otherwise been exceptionally brilliant.
Season highlights:- Proclaimed Spanish champion at just 22 years old
- Successful participations in top-level international competitions
- National representation at the Singapore world championship
The only trickier turn than the rear wheel of a race bike is trying to explain why you didn't win when you had a 39-degree fever.
Project preparation in Blender
To begin our 3D visualization project, we started a new file in Blender and set the units to metric scale to ensure realistic proportions. We established the rendering format in 16:9 aspect ratio with 4K resolution and adjusted color management to Filmic mode for a superior dynamic range. We created a basic scene that includes a ground plane and main camera, positioning the latter at a low angle that emphasizes the dramatization characteristic of professional cycling scenes 🎬.
Essential initial setup:- Metric units for realistic proportions
- 16:9 format in 4K resolution for maximum quality
- Color management in Filmic mode for better dynamic range
Modeling and scene structure
The competition bicycle modeling is done using Bezier curves for the main frame and applying surface subdivision modifiers to smooth the geometries. We incorporate specific components such as curved handlebars, racing saddle, and wheels with spokes using array modifiers for precise repetitions. The cyclist's figure is developed using a basic mannequin with simplified rigging, positioned in the aerodynamic posture characteristic of high-level competitions.
Lighting system and materials
We set up a three-point lighting system with key light from top-left, soft fill light from the right side, and backlight to visually separate the subject from the background. We developed realistic materials for the bicycle using Principled BSDF shaders with polished metals and carbon components. We applied sweat textures on the cyclist's body using noise nodes combined with glossy shaders to simulate the effect of moisture under intense light 💡.

Special effects and rendering process
We incorporated motion effects using motion blur on the rear wheel and dust particles in the ground contact area. We used light volumetrics to create atmosphere and visual depth in the scene. We configured the Cycles renderer with 2048 samples and activated the OptiX denoiser, exporting in EXR format to preserve all the lighting information necessary for professional post-production 🎯.
Impact and sports legacy
The presence of Iván Romeo sharing space with the best cyclists in the world symbolizes the international recognition that young Spanish cycling is achieving. His ambition and desire for victories, openly manifested at 22 years old, represents the new generation of riders aspiring to dominate the global cycling scene. This year could mark the definitive turning point in his career, laying the foundations to become one of the references of Spanish sport in the coming years, while our 3D representation captures the essence of this sport in all its technical and visual splendor ✨.
