RealityScan, Epic Games' free photogrammetry application, has released a significant update with version 1.6. This new version offers enhanced options for both image capture and 3D model processing.
New scanning modes
With the update, there are now two scanning modes to choose from when starting a project. The default mode asks the user which option they want, but it can be modified in the settings.
Augmented Reality Mode
This is the original RealityScan mode, which allows viewing the point cloud in real time as the model is generated. However, in this mode, camera parameters cannot be adjusted.
Camera Control Mode
The new mode offers full control over camera settings, allowing adjustment of focus, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and flash.
- Focus and shutter speed: Manual adjustment via sliders or by setting focus and exposure by tapping the screen.
- White balance: Adjustment using a reference card (gray or white) for greater accuracy.
- Flash: Activation or deactivation during scanning, recommended to keep it constant throughout the process.
New processing options panel
The new processing options panel provides a clearer view of the project and allows for greater customization in 3D model generation.
- Photo thumbnails: Quickly preview captured photos.
- Mesh resolution: Choose between normal mesh (100,000 polygons) or high (1 million polygons).
- Mesh filtering: Select between "Smoothed" or "Detailed" options for the mesh.
- Texture resolution: Choose between 4K or 8K textures, depending on the required level of detail.
Bug fixes
Version 1.6 also fixes several bugs on Android and iOS devices, improving the application's stability.
- Fix for inverted color channels on Xiaomi phones.
- Solution to crashes when opening projects on Android.
- Fixes for project updates on Sketchfab on iOS.
Known issues
Despite the improvements, some bugs remain, such as incorrect footer display on iOS and occasional corruption of final models.
