The company Fred Rogers Productions (FRP) has received a grant of $100,000 from Citizens to boost two of its key programs: Writers Neighborhood and community engagement events based on the series Alma’s Way, produced for PBS KIDS.
Writers Neighborhood is a Platform for Emerging Writers
The Writers Neighborhood program is a mentorship scholarship aimed at supporting emerging writers in the world of children's media. In its third year, this initiative helps connect new talents with industry professionals, giving them the opportunity to learn and network with:
- Screenwriters experienced in children's content.
- Story editors specialized in animation.
- Television producers focused on education.
- Lead writers of recognized series.
Alma’s Way is a Series with Educational and Cultural Impact
The animated series Alma’s Way follows the adventures of Alma Rivera, a six-year-old Puerto Rican girl who lives in the Bronx with her family and friends. Created by Sonia Manzano, the series seeks to foster confidence and critical thinking in children, reflecting cultural diversity and promoting positive representation in the media.
Community Events to Connect with Families
Citizens' grant will also fund interactive events inspired by the series. In the fall of 2024, Citizens supported an accessible screening at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, based on an episode where Alma visits the museum. This year, a similar event will be organized in Pittsburgh, promoting learning and inclusion through real-life experiences.
The Commitment of Fred Rogers Productions and Citizens
According to Paul Siefken, president and CEO of Fred Rogers Productions, the collaboration with Citizens will allow these efforts to continue to positively impact more children, families, and content creators.
“Fred Rogers Productions and Citizens share the mission of supporting creativity and education in childhood. Thanks to this alliance, we can continue developing programs and events that inspire new generations of storytellers.”
For his part, Mark Rendulic, president of the Pittsburgh market at Citizens, highlighted the importance of supporting cultural and educational initiatives. According to Rendulic, FRP has been a pillar in promoting creativity and learning for generations, and his company is committed to strengthening talent in the children's media industry.
Impact of the Grant on FRP's Future
Thanks to this grant, Fred Rogers Productions will be able to strengthen its writing mentorship program and expand educational events inspired by Alma’s Way. With a focus on creativity, diversity, and learning, these initiatives continue to enrich children's experiences and foster the development of new generations of storytellers.
