Crunchyroll has revealed that it is working on an anime adaptation of the successful Ghost of Tsushima video game series, which will premiere in 2027. This project is based on the cooperative Legends mode, which takes players into a team combat experience inspired by Japanese mythology. The series will be produced in collaboration with Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions, with the support of Sucker Punch Productions.
The Story of Ghost of Tsushima and Its Expansion into Anime
Ghost of Tsushima is an action-adventure video game set in feudal Japan, specifically on Tsushima Island, during the Mongol invasion in the 13th century. Players take control of Jin Sakai, a samurai who fights to defend his home and honor, adapting to new tactics to face the invaders.
The Legends mode, which will serve as the basis for the anime adaptation, takes players to a mystical Japan where heroes battle supernatural forces. This mode focuses on player cooperation, facing challenges and mythical enemies, making the narrative particularly rich and visually stunning.
An Innovative Approach for Fans
The animated adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will seek to further expand the story and elements that players already know, but in a completely new format. Video game fans will be able to see how the characters and legends of Tsushima come to life through animation, maintaining the epic essence and visual aesthetic that made the game famous.
A High-Level Creative Team
The project will be directed by Takanobu Mizuno, known for his experience in animation. The script will be written by Gen Urobuchi from NITRO PLUS, famous for his work on anime such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The animation will be handled by KAMIKAZE DOUGA, a studio renowned for its dynamic visual style.
The music and soundtrack, key elements for the video game's atmosphere, will be managed by Sony Music, ensuring that the adaptation maintains the same emotional impact as the original game.
Comments from the Project Leads
“This project is a testament to the creative synergy within the Sony family, uniting the expertise of PlayStation Studios and PlayStation Productions with the vision of Sucker Punch Productions and Aniplex,” said Rahul Purini, president of Crunchyroll.
According to Asad Qizilbash of PlayStation Productions: “The rich universe of Ghost of Tsushima and its Legends mode, based on Japanese mythology, provide the perfect canvas to create a series that fuses the essence of the video game with a unique animation narrative.”
