Cartagena commissions a 3D model to analyze the vaults of the Plaza de Artillería
The Cartagena City Council has formalized an agreement with the firm Sinergea Gestión en Ingeniería y Geotecnia for an amount of 5,808 euros. The commission consists of carrying out a photogrammetric survey and generating a three-dimensional model of the vaults supporting the Plaza Parque de Artillería. This decision arises after identifying several cracks in the structure, classified as inactive fissures that do not compromise safety in the short term. The technical result will serve as the basis for designing a future project to repair the property. 🏛️
Document precisely to protect history
The construction, dating back to the late 18th century, currently houses the Military Historical Museum and the Municipal Archive of the city. For this reason, it is crucial that any future action guarantees both stability and the conservation of its patrimonial value. The 3D model that will be produced will allow for an exact examination of the current state of the vaults and the design of solutions that maintain the original architectural essence. This preparatory work prevents operating without precise information on a monument of such historical relevance.
Key advantages of the digital model:- Allows for exact measurement of the dimensions of existing cracks.
- Facilitates evaluation of possible deformations in the geometry of the vaults.
- Serves as a basis for simulating the impact of different repair methods.
Cutting-edge technology, such as 3D scanning, allies with heritage conservation, demonstrating that innovation and history can coexist.
Photogrammetry as a fundamental technical tool
The photogrammetry technique is based on capturing a large number of high-quality photographs from multiple perspectives. Using specialized software, a precise three-dimensional digital representation with real textures is built from them. This model will act as a digital twin of the vaults, a tool where technicians can analyze, measure, and virtually test interventions. In this way, a solid basis is available to decide how to act in the least aggressive way possible.
Process and application of the survey:- Massive capture of images from all possible angles of the structure.
- Process the data with software to generate the 3D mesh and texture.
- Use the model to diagnose and plan any repair in advance.
A safer future for heritage
This project underscores how modern digital tools are essential for preserving ancient structures. The 3D model not only documents the current state but becomes the cornerstone for any future intervention, ensuring that repairs respect the historical integrity of the building. Thus, it is guaranteed that this emblematic space in Cartagena will continue to house its important cultural legacy for many more years. 🔍
