Bigbug: When CGEV Played God with Comedic Robots
In Bigbug, the French studio CGEV proved that the future can be as ridiculous as it is nostalgic 🤖💥. For this Netflix futuristic satire, they created a unique aesthetic where the digital meets the kitsch of the 60s.
The main technical challenges included:
- Cartoonish Robots: machines with more personality than some humans
- Retro-futuristic Environments: tomorrow seen from yesterday
- Exaggerated Physics: because in the future, Newton's laws are optional
"We wanted the effects to look handmade, even though we used cutting-edge technology"
The animation of the robots was particularly challenging, combining mechanical movements with almost human expressions. The result? Machines that steal scenes more efficiently than a data thief.
Fun fact: the design of the robotic characters went through more iterations than a Microsoft operating system. At least these worked on the first try.
If there's one thing to learn from this breakdown, it's that the future - at least in cinema - can be as absurd as we want, as long as we have the right artists to make it believable 😉.
