PBS Kids has announced the launch of a universe centered on Acoustic Rooster, a character inspired by Kwame Alexander's book "Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band." This project includes both a one-hour special and a series of animated shorts titled Acoustic Rooster: Jazzy Jams, aiming to introduce children to the world of jazz while promoting values of collaboration, creativity, and personal expression.
An Educational Musical Experience
The special, debuting on May 1st, and the shorts, with the first episode premiering on April 11th, will feature 24 original songs composed by Mark McLean. Additionally, it will include the participation of renowned guest artists such as Herbie Hancock and bassist Amy Shook. Blending entertainment and education, Acoustic Rooster seeks to spark interest in music and foster teamwork.
A Multi-Platform Approach for Children
The Acoustic Rooster universe extends beyond the screen, with an interactive game called Groovin’ with Acoustic Rooster, which allows children to create their own music and play along to their favorite songs from the show. This interactive approach teaches basic musical concepts in a fun and accessible way.
Inspiring Characters and Lessons
In the special's plot, Acoustic Rooster, a guitar-playing rooster, dreams of being part of a world-renowned jazz band. Accompanied by his friends, such as Mules Davis, Lil’ Herdin, Ella Finchgerald, Duck Ellington, and The Chick-A-Dees, the protagonist explores the importance of music and teamwork.
Sara DeWitt, Senior Vice President of PBS Kids, highlighted that Acoustic Rooster holds immense educational value, as music can inspire creativity and help children express themselves in meaningful ways. In this manner, jazz becomes a vehicle to support the personal growth of the youngest viewers.
A Legacy That Continues with Books and More
In addition to the series and special, the Acoustic Rooster universe will expand with two illustrated books: Acoustic Rooster and Friends and Acoustic Rooster Sings the Alphabet, published by Sleeping Bear Press. These books combine lyrical text and facts about jazz, providing an educational and entertaining experience.
Jazz as a Means of Connection
Julius Harper, the project's executive producer, summarized the series' core message: "Jazz is about collaboration and working together to create something magical." Through the adventures of Acoustic Rooster, children will learn how individual expression can contribute to collective success, a valuable life lesson.
With a strong focus on music, Acoustic Rooster not only celebrates jazz but also offers profound lessons on the importance of collaboration and creativity, making it a meaningful experience for new generations.
