The Asobal League Renews Its Competition Format for 2026
Spanish handball is preparing for a major transformation. The Asobal League has given the green light to a complete overhaul of its competition system, which will be implemented starting from the 2026-27 season. A three-stage design to maximize excitement
According to the document received by the sixteen clubs, the tournament will be organized into three distinct phases. The first will be a round-robin where each team faces the other fifteen once, completing 15 matchdays. After this regular phase, the standings will divide the participants into two groups of eight teams each.
The teams' journey:- Top group: The top eight will play a new round-robin for the title. Subsequently, the top-ranked teams from this round-robin will compete in elimination playoffs with quarterfinals, semifinals, and a grand final.
- Bottom group: The remaining eight will compete in their own round-robin to avoid relegation. The last two teams in this group will lose their category and drop to the second division.
This design aims to keep the excitement until the end for more teams, as there will be decisive battles both at the top and the bottom.
