Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided to close Bluepoint Games as part of an internal restructuring. The studio, acquired in 2021 and recognized for its technically notable remakes, will leave around 70 workers unemployed in March. The company will attempt to relocate part of the team. Bluepoint did not release an original title since its acquisition, and its project in development, a game as a service, was canceled.
The Technical Legacy and the Challenge of Evolution 🤔
Bluepoint leaves a technical legacy based on recreating graphics engines and assets from scratch, while maintaining the essence of the original design. Its work demonstrated a notable ability to port classic mechanics to modern architectures. The closure raises questions about the sustainability of the studio specialized in remakes model within a corporate strategy that seems to prioritize continuous service franchises and large-scale new IPs.
The Definitive Remake: From Studio to Memory 😔
Ironies of fate: the studio that mastered the art of rejuvenating classic titles could not receive its own corporate remake. After years of giving a second life to others' works, its own original project was canceled. Now, its trajectory will be remastered in farewell articles, a genre in which, unfortunately, they had no experience. An ending we didn't expect for the specialists in epic endings.
