ETH Zurich has launched a series of introductory courses with no admission requirements, aimed at guiding young people on their educational path. This initiative seeks to reduce dropout rates in technical careers through accessible practical experiences. For our community, it is relevant that several of the 15 programs include disciplines related to 3D design and digital visualization, fields that we master at Foro3D.com.
Technical Foundation and Practical Exploration for 3D Graphics ⚙️
ETH's proposal reinforces a principle well-known here: a solid technical foundation is the support for mastering complex tools. Early exploration in areas such as applied mathematics, programming fundamentals, or principles of scientific visualization, offered by these courses, builds the necessary mental framework for parametric modeling, photorealistic rendering, and reliable 3D printing. Without this structure, learning advanced software can become superficial.
A Course So We Don't Abandon Blender on the First Try? 😅
Perhaps, if these courses had existed when we started, some of us wouldn't have confused topology with a branch of biology, or thought that a Normal Map was the subway map of a city called "Normal." It could have prevented my first rigging attempt from looking more like a digital exorcism than an animation. A prior foundation prevents the first render cycle with 500 area lights from making you quit and consider a career as a goat herder, which at least has a kinder natural light schedule.
