Clear Angle Studios, a specialist in 3D/4D capture, has integrated DI4D's facial imaging technology. This strategic move gives rise to TopoTrack, a new high-fidelity facial tracking service that they will deploy in their global studios. The goal is to offer a more efficient workflow for VFX and animation productions. As part of the agreement, DI4D co-founder Dr. Colin Urquhart joins the studio as Strategic Advisor.
The Technology Behind High-Fidelity Facial Tracking ðŸ§
TopoTrack is based on DI4D's technology, which uses multichannel camera systems to capture facial geometry and texture data with sub-millimeter precision. This method, which works with polarized lighting, generates dynamic and detailed 4D meshes. Integration into Clear Angle's global infrastructure enables a scalable process, from on-set capture to delivery of animation-ready data, reducing post-processing time.
Goodbye to Digital Stone Faces 😄
With this, it seems the era of characters with facial expressions that look carved in marble is coming to an end. Actors will be able to frown, smile, or make surprised eyes without their digital avatar interpreting it as a mere blink. That said, we'll have to see if animators miss those long hours spent moving vertices one by one to simulate something as simple as a wink.
