3D forensic reconstruction is no longer exclusive to archaeology; it has become a key tool in historical research. In this pipeline, the goal is to recreate the assault on a medieval castle with millimeter precision. This is not about fantasy, but a rigorous analysis of every stone and every tactical movement.
Technical pipeline: from point cloud to virtual siege 🏰
The process begins with a LiDAR scan of the original structure, generating a point cloud with a density of 2 cm. After data cleaning and registration, a high-resolution polygonal mesh is built. Lighting is calculated using physically based rendering (PBR) to simulate the sunlight of the day of the attack. The attackers' animation is based on motion capture (mocap) of historical fencing, while the destruction of the gate is simulated with a rigid body solver. The final result is exported in 4K for expert analysis.

The only problem is that the crowd simulation engine, after three hours of computation, decided that the defenders had a higher probability of winning if they took a break for tea. So, instead of an epic battle, the render shows 40 soldiers sitting in a circle while the battering ram crashes against an empty gate. Historical accuracy is maintained, but the software's logic has a strange sense of humor. In the end, a patience plugin had to be added so the assault would finish before nightfall.
