The creator of Overwatch abandons heroes to get his boots dirty. The Legend of California takes us to the 1849 gold rush with an open world for 100 players. Here you can mine, trade, or ride a horse, but also murder your neighbor or shoot their mount. Buildings are safe, though morality is not so much. Servers reset monthly, but unlocks persist. For the average citizen, this means non-stop action and no public PvE mode.
The engine of chaos: persistence and monthly resets ⚙️
Kaplan has confirmed that the persistence of unlocks between resets is the key to ensuring each month doesn't feel like a clean slate. The technical system records player progress on the server, but maps and resources regenerate. This forces a balance between economy and violence. There is no PvE mode on public servers; only private ones will offer that alternative. Development is in an early phase: two full alphas remain before seeing a concrete release date.
Pets will have to wait their turn in the mine 🐴
If you were hoping to breed horses or have a cowboy puppy, bad news. The budget doesn't stretch to such nonsense. Kaplan has let slip that extras will come after launch, like someone promising to pay for the next round when they have funds again. So in the meantime, you'll have to settle for shooting other people's horses, which is free and requires no DLC. That said, don't try to build a fence to protect your vegetable patch, because that really can't be touched. At least the frustration doesn't reset every month.
