Nintendo has confirmed the release of Splatoon Raiders, a single-player spin-off of its shooter series, on July 23rd for the Nintendo Switch 2. The trailer shows a distinct campaign that retains the ink-based gameplay and signature soundtrack, but with a narrative focus. Although primarily single-player, it includes cooperative play for up to three people online or locally.
An adapted engine for a more narrative experience 🎮
The development of Splatoon Raiders required adjustments to the series' graphics engine to support a linear campaign with more detailed scenarios and cinematic sequences. Nintendo has optimized the ink physics to work in enclosed environments and with fewer players, prioritizing stability at 60 fps. The cooperative mode, while present, does not include dedicated servers; it uses peer-to-peer connection for up to three companions, which may generate some latency in local matches with many ink effects.
The ink now also stains your free time 🎨
Nintendo has decided that Splatoon fans need an excuse to stay indoors during the summer, and Splatoon Raiders arrives just in time. However, if you were expecting a competitive online mode to continue arguing with strangers, you'll have to settle for painting walls solo while your friends watch from the couch. At least the soundtrack will still be just as catchy, even if it's to remind you that you're alone.
