The ninth edition of the Quirino Awards was held in Tenerife, highlighting the work of the Ibero-American animation industry. The winning film was Decorado, by Spanish director Alberto Vázquez. Other awards went to the Colombian series There Is Something Behind You and the Portuguese short film Dog Alone. The event aims to give visibility to the sector, although imbalances in the concentration of production persist.
Tools and Workflows in Contemporary Animation 🛠️
The production of award-winning projects like these depends on hybrid pipelines. Traditional techniques, such as hand-drawn animation in Decorado, are combined with standard software for compositing and post-production. The accessibility of rendering and 2D/3D animation tools allows medium-sized studios to compete. However, the lack of specialized infrastructure in some regions still creates a technical gap compared to more established creative hubs.
The Magical Geopolitics of Animation Awards 🗺️
It's curious how these awards bring together so many countries only to then demonstrate that the creative map has a few holes. It seems the Ibero-American spirit flies free, but always lands at the same two or three airports. Perhaps they should add a category for best film made from a basement without fiber optic internet. That way, diversity would be not only cultural but also based on zip code.
