An archaeological team has identified in Abydos, Egypt, what is considered the oldest known large-scale brewery. The facility dates back about 5,000 years, to the period of King Narmer. Its main purpose was to supply beer for royal rituals, demonstrating the cultural and ceremonial importance of this beverage since the dawn of pharaonic civilization.

The structure had eight production sectors, each with 40 ceramic vessels arranged in two rows. In these vats, a mixture of water and grain, likely barley, was heated. Evidence indicates that the facility could produce about 22,000 liters per batch. This volume suggests advanced logistical planning for its time, requiring storage, distribution, and specialized labor.

It is curious to think that, while today we debate the foam of an IPA, the Egyptians solved engineering problems to serve beer on a state scale. There would be no room for criticism about bitterness or body: the clientele was, literally, divine. One wonders if Narmer's master brewers also had heated debates about the ideal serving temperature, although surely their bosses were far more inflexible than a modern bartender.
