Square Enix has unveiled the sixth expansion for Final Fantasy 14 Online, Evercold, which will land in January 2027. The big news is its arrival on Nintendo Switch 2 in August, but with a condition that has set off alarm bells: current subscribers on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox will need a separate subscription to play on the handheld. According to Naoki Yoshida, the decision came after lengthy negotiations with Nintendo.
The technical hurdle of the double subscription 💸
Cross-platform account compatibility will be fully supported, but the business model forces you to pay twice if you want to switch between platforms. Although the game already requires a monthly subscription on PC and consoles, the Switch 2 version will additionally require an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription for online play. This means that to play on the go, you'll have to add another fixed cost to the existing one. Yoshida explained that the agreement with Nintendo did not allow for a single fee, leaving players with a double bill.
Paying twice for the same moogle 😱
So, if you were planning to take your lalafell to bed or the bathroom, get ready to open your wallet twice. Square Enix sells you the freedom to play wherever you want, but with the fine print that freedom costs double. Sure, at least you'll be able to die in a dungeon from the couch or the train, which is what really matters. But don't forget to pay the extra fee, or you'll be stuck staring at the loading screen.
