FABULOUS and AMT have validated a complete SLS additive manufacturing process for food contact applications. The certification covers the combination of the DETECT PA11 material with the PostPro Pure post-processing, complying with FDA and EFSA regulations. The key is that the entire chain is certified, offering a documented and scalable solution for regulated sectors like food or pharmaceuticals, facilitating the transition from prototype to production.
How Safety is Addressed in Porous SLS Parts 🔍
The process solves two main risks of SLS printing for food. First, the PA11 material includes a detectable marker to prevent physical contamination. Second, the post-processing with AMT's solvent vapor seals the porous surface typical of SLS, eliminating the micropores where bacteria and residues could accumulate. This combination guarantees the final part's tightness and cleanliness, meeting the most demanding hygiene requirements.
Goodbye to Bites with a Taste of Unfiltered Nylon 😅
It seems the era of adding a crunchy, polymeric touch to our food with SLS parts is coming to an end. Thanks to this process, we can now be sure that our cocktail stirrer prototype won't add any flavor other than that of the cocktail itself. An advancement that, without a doubt, both legal departments and sensitive stomachs will equally appreciate. Finally, a certification that allows us to eat in peace, literally.
