Marvel has announced a series of Timeless variant covers created by Alex Ross. These illustrations, taken from his upcoming graphic novel Marvel Dimensions, will begin to be published in June. A total of 18 covers will be released featuring iconic characters like Hulk, shown in the distinctive and realistic pictorial style that characterizes the artist. 🎨
Traditional pictorial technique in a digital medium 🖌️
Alex Ross's work stands out for its focus on classical pictorial techniques, using watercolor and gouache. This manual process contrasts with the predominant digital production in the comic industry. The anatomical fidelity, the treatment of light, and the texture of his paintings bring a sense of tangibility and weight to the characters. Adapting these works to covers involves high-resolution scanning and precise color adjustment to maintain the integrity of the original work in the printed format.
When Hulk poses for an oil portrait 🎭
It's understandable that heroes want a session with Ross. After years of ink strokes and flat colors, anyone deserves a portrait with some Renaissance dignity. Imagine Hulk holding back his rage so as not to break the studio, or Spider-Man trying to maintain the same heroic pose for hours. Ross probably tells them hold still with the same authority that Stan Lee said Excelsior. At least in these covers, the building demolition looks with an impeccable brushstroke.
